Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) wrote ballets, symphonies, and The Seasons — Russian melody at a public temperature. The piano cycle is a year in a room: months as moods, a calendar you can play. The big scores (Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, the concertos) made him the first Russian composer the world could hum.
