Description

Aristophanes’ Plutus is a witty and provocative comedy exploring wealth, justice and social inequality in ancient Athens. Chremylus, a poor but virtuous man, sets out to restore the sight of Plutus, the blind god of wealth, so riches can be distributed according to merit rather than chance. As the plan succeeds, society is thrown into comic disorder, exposing greed, hypocrisy and the uneasy relationship between wealth and virtue. Through satire and farce, Aristophanes asks whether money can ever create a truly just world.

Author

Aristophanes was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his forty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and are used to define it. Also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author.
