Author

John Francis Wade (1711–1786) was an English Catholic exile in Douai, a copyist of plainchant whose Latin hymn Adeste fideles became O Come All Ye Faithful. Two carol titles here. The melody travelled; the attribution settled on Wade. Christmas still sounds like his manuscript — a procession already on the road to the manger.
