Description

Annette stands on Pont Neuf after a lover's betrayal, then finds fragile hope with Englishman Dick Le Geyt until illness at Fontainebleau forces her to choose strength over despair. Spoken as when recovery still asks whether new bonds can hold a shattered heart.

Author

Mary Cholmondeley (1859–1925) was English novelist of psychological depth. Born aristocratic, she explored Victorian women's constraints. Her breakthrough, "Red Pottage," depicted repression and greed. She portrayed claustrophobic domestic settings, blending mystery with realism. Unmarried, she channelled observation into fiction. Her work influenced feminist literature.
