Description

Noli Me Tangere is a landmark novel in Philippine literature and a foundational work of political fiction. Written by national hero José Rizal, it exposes the corruption, abuse, and oppression endured by Filipinos under Spanish colonial rule and the Catholic clergy. The story follows Crisóstomo Ibarra, a young Filipino who returns from Europe intent on reforming society through education and progress, only to face betrayal, injustice, and the ruthless power of the friars. Blending romance, realism, and revolutionary critique, Rizal’s novel ignited nationalist sentiment and laid the intellectual groundwork for the Philippine Revolution. A powerful indictment of colonial tyranny, Noli Me Tangere remains a testament to the struggle for freedom, justice, and national identity.

Author

José Rizal (1861–1896) is the national hero of the Philippines — ophthalmologist, novelist, and martyr of the struggle against Spanish colonial rule. Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo exposed friar power and social injustice with a novelist's eye; essays such as The Indolence of the Filipino answered colonial insult with history. Rizal wrote for reform and died for a nation that claimed him.
