Description

Nationalism, a form of patriotism for one's country, is often the result of a belief in the superiority of one's nation and its culture. This may lead to prejudice against other nations and cultures. Tagore was an Indian nationalist who looked back on his homeland with fondness while also favoring more connections with Britain. He believed there were many ways to grow Indian independence without rejecting British ties.

Author

Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) wrote Gitanjali and made a world listen to Bengal. Poet, songwriter, playwright, and founder of Santiniketan, he was the first non-European Nobel laureate in literature. The English Gitanjali is a doorway; the Bengali work is a city. He composed songs that became national anthems and argued, politely and without pause, for a modern India that could still sing. Fourteen titles here.
