Three stories of love, class, and moral pressure, including Janet Black's world of beauty, ambition, and social judgment. Cholmondeley's sharp portraits of desire against expectation. Spoken as when fitting into a wealthy circle costs more than pride wants to admit.

Author

Mary Cholmondeley (1859–1925) was English novelist of psychological depth. Born aristocratic, she explored Victorian women's constraints. Her breakthrough, "Red Pottage," depicted repression and greed. She portrayed claustrophobic domestic settings, blending mystery with realism. Unmarried, she channelled observation into fiction. Her work influenced feminist literature.
