Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) was born in Bonn, settled in Vienna, and wrote through a deafness that should have ended the career. The piano sonatas — the so-called Moonlight among them — are private weather at public volume; the Ninth Symphony put a chorus on the summit of the orchestral mountain. Late quartets followed, as if the string quartet had more future than the man. He did not make difficulty decorative. He made it the architecture.
