Description

Thyrsis and Corydon marry young on ideals and little else, then discover what love costs when rent, hunger, and a baby arrive before success does. He burns to write; she carries the weight of the household and of hope that keeps fraying. Sinclair’s semi-autobiographical novel of marriage, poverty, and vocation in early-20th-century America: not a soft romance, but the hard education of two people who wanted a freer life and found each other, and the age, harder than the dream.

Author

Upton Sinclair (1878–1968) wrote The Jungle and a long shelf of muckraking novels in which industry is the villain. The Chicago stockyards novel was meant to convert readers to socialism; it converted them to food reform instead — and still stands as American protest fiction at documentary heat. Sinclair kept going: oil, coal, journalism, politics, a career of books used as weapons.
