Benito Pérez Galdós (1843–1920) is the great realist of nineteenth-century Spain — a novelist often ranked with Dickens, Balzac, and Tolstoy, and second only to Cervantes in Spanish stature. Fortunata y Jacinta turned Madrid's streets, tenements, and drawing rooms into a complete human world; the Episodios Nacionales retold the nation's history as story rather than monument.
