Description

Fabrice at seventeen is idealistic, rather naive, and speaks poor French. However, he will not be stopped and leaves his home on Lake Como to travel north with false papers. He wanders through France, losing money and horses rapidly. He is imprisoned as a spy, but escapes, donning the uniform of a dead French hussar. In his excitement to play the role of a French soldier, he wanders onto the field at the Battle of Waterloo.

Author

Stendhal (1783–1842), the pen name of Henri Beyle, wrote The Red and the Black and The Charterhouse of Parma — novels of ambition, love, and the morning-after of Napoleon. His prose is fast, ironic, and psychologically modern. Stendhal invented a way of seeing the careerist heart. With 5 titles in our catalogue, including French-language readings, he remains the novelist of energy and disillusion sharing one pulse.
