Description

Hesse describes a bleak picture: spa guests “with clumsy bones”, lacking appetite, needing help, bored. He reports on "those shameful days", on "that Hessian who behaved so strangely in Baden". His sciatic nerve drives the writer to the health resort west of Zurich for three weeks. Gout is added to the new spa guest, the spa doctor states and immediately classifies the newcomer as a neurotic.

Author

Hermann Hesse (1877–1962) was a German-Swiss poet and novelist who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946. His books explore the inward journey — the search for authenticity, spiritual balance, and self-knowledge beyond social convention. Siddhartha, Demian, and Steppenwolf made him a guiding voice for generations of readers across Europe and America. Hesse writes with lyrical simplicity about the hardest question: how to become oneself.
