Description

John Burnet of Barns, Tweeddale heir, is hunted after his cousin Gilbert names him traitor. Hear Buchan’s first long romance unabridged in English: Marjory Veitch, Glasgow and Leyden cut short, Nicol Plenderleith on the hills, sword and spate. Late seventeenth-century Borders, not a Reformation pamphlet. Listen to pursuit as geography — moor, cave, a gypsy camp, a duel. Spoken Scots and the pace of an outlaw who still wants his land and his girl. Honour as a chase you can follow by ear. A Stevenson-coloured adventure of cousin-hatred, heard as weather and hooves. Marjory held and lost and held, Gilbert’s sword, a cave-in, Tweed in spate. Hear John’s tutor-skipping boyhood become outlawry. Spoken Borders: Nicol’s Scots, a cousin’s lie, the estate waiting if the hunted man can stay alive long enough.
