Description

Humphrey Salkeld looks back on youth amid exploration, inheritance rivalries, and perilous voyages that pull him into intrigue and high-seas danger in the age of Drake. Love, courage, and political risk meet on open water where fortune and honour share the same storm. Spoken as when Drake’s days still ask what a young man will risk when the horizon will not wait.

Author

J. S. Fletcher (1863–1935) treated the detective story as a trade, and honoured it. He produced at a Victorian-Edwardian pace that later Golden Age writers would recognise: wills, country houses, city chambers, and the long English suspicion that respectability is a costume. Fletcher is not flashy. He is reliable — which, in crime fiction, is a kind of style.
