Description

Chesterton against the clever unbelief of his moment: essays that prefer a creed to a mood. Heretics is paradox as a sword — Shaw, Kipling, the cult of progress, and a defence of ordinary truth. Wit in the service of orthodoxy, never dull. Each essay picks a fashionable mind and asks what it has put in the place of a God. Chesterton’s answer is almost always a joke with a creed inside. Still readable as a brawl. Shaw and Kipling walked out and tripped, for sport.

Author

Gilbert Keith Chesterton was an English writer, often referred to as the prince of paradox. Chesterton is well known for his fictional priest-detective Father Brown, and for his reasoned apologetics. Even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the wide appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton's wit, paradoxical style, and defence of tradition made him a dominant figure in early 20th-century literature.
