Description

An ilustrado returns from Europe to build a school and marry María Clara; friar power and colonial Manila turn reform into persecution. Rizal’s Noli, cut into English by Frank Gannett as Friars and Filipinos, keeps the novel’s weather — cockpit and convent, sermon and dinner-table war — so clerical dominance is lived story, not abstract indictment.

Author

José Rizal (1861–1896) is the national hero of the Philippines — ophthalmologist, novelist, and martyr of the struggle against Spanish colonial rule. Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo exposed friar power and social injustice with a novelist's eye; essays such as The Indolence of the Filipino answered colonial insult with history. Rizal wrote for reform and died for a nation that claimed him.
