Author

Mary Shelley (1797–1851) wrote Frankenstein at nineteen and invented a myth that has never gone out of circulation. Daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin, partner of Percy Shelley, she turned a ghost-story challenge beside Lake Geneva into the modern fable of maker and creature. Science, pity, and responsibility share the ice: the novel is less a monster tale than a question about what we owe what we create.
