Description

Filmer is the timid brain who finally solves practical flight, then finds fame and a ruthless newspaper man pushing him toward a public first ascent he never meant to take himself. Wells turns invention into psychological drama: isolation, hubris, and the gap between solving a problem and living with its demand. On the great day the inventor who changed the air must face the machine, or escape it. Spoken as sharp tragedy with a human shrug of irony.

Author

H. G. Wells (1866–1946) was born in Bromley, trained in biology under Huxley, and turned that laboratory habit into fiction. The Time Machine sent a Victorian into deep time; The War of the Worlds brought the sky down on the Home Counties. He wrote as if the future were a social problem with monsters attached. The novels argue while they entertain. A draper's son who made scientific romance a public language.
