Description

Ivan Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons is a portrait of Russia caught between generations. Through the conflict between traditional aristocratic values and radical new ideas, Turgenev explores a changing society, family bonds, identity and belief. His nuanced characters reveal the strengths and flaws of both old and new worlds, while lyrical prose and philosophical depth make this timeless novel a meditation on change, conflict and the human condition.

Author

Ivan Turgenev (1818–1883) grew up on a wealthy Russian estate, studied at the universities of Moscow, St Petersburg, and Berlin, and later settled largely in France. A Sportsman's Sketches revealed the intelligence and dignity of serfs through apparently effortless country scenes; Fathers and Sons caught the rift between liberal parents and their impatient, nihilist heirs.
