Description

Grace James’s collection of traditional Japanese folktales — spirit, wisdom, and beauty of that storytelling heritage, carefully retold for younger listeners. Brave children, magical creatures, talking animals, benevolent spirits from rural legend and oral tradition. "The Boy Who Drew Cats" and "The Stone-Mason’s Dream" blend wonder with moral clarity: courage, humility, reverence for nature. Elegant prose keeping the earthly and the supernatural in balance. Kindness rewarded, evil outwitted, the ordinary become magical.

Author

Grace James (1882–1965) was an English writer and Japanese folklorist, born in Tokyo, who collected and retold fairy tales for Western readers. Her Fairy Tales from Japan gathers foxes, spirits, and village wonders from the Japanese folk tradition — stories of humour, danger, and moral surprise. She also published memoirs of Japan, bringing an insider's affection to a literature of enchantment that still travels well.
