Description

Colonel Tempest’s reckless wager puts a price on his nephew John’s life just as a family reunion at Overleigh and Diana Tempest’s arrival bind love, inheritance, and murderous intent under one roof. Duty, desire, and a hired death collide while old estrangements reopen. Spoken as when Diana Tempest still asks what a family will stake when pride buys a killing.

Author

Mary Cholmondeley (1859–1925) was English novelist of psychological depth. Born aristocratic, she explored Victorian women's constraints. Her breakthrough, "Red Pottage," depicted repression and greed. She portrayed claustrophobic domestic settings, blending mystery with realism. Unmarried, she channelled observation into fiction. Her work influenced feminist literature.
