Description

In Cynthia, Leonard Merrick tracks the turbulent marriage of struggling novelist Humphrey Kent and the bourgeois Cynthia Walford. Beginning in Dieppe and moving to London, their union faces severe financial strain, manuscript rejections, and a bleak period of hack writing. As Humphrey battles professional ruin, the hardship forces Cynthia to evolve from a sheltered girl into a mature, resilient woman, ultimately reshaping their bond.

Author

Leonard Merrick (1864–1939) was the English novelist other novelists kept recommending. Joseph Conrad admired him; so did a generation that valued craft over noise. Merrick wrote of theatre people, money worries, and the almost-made-it — characters who can see success and cannot quite grasp it. His prose is professional in the best sense: polished, observant, and quietly devastating.
