Author

George Moore (1852–1933) was the Irish novelist who brought French naturalism into English fiction and never quite stopped arguing with Ireland about it. Trained among the painters and writers of Paris, he wrote of art, desire, and the stubborn facts of ordinary life — servants, theatres, and consciences under pressure. Esther Waters remains his most durable novel: a story of a working woman's endurance told without Victorian flinch.
