Author

Erik Satie (1866–1925) made modern music look easy and feel strange. The Gymnopédies float; the Gnossiennes wander; Parade and the Dada years showed a composer who liked to puncture pomp. Satie treated the piano as furniture and as confession — sometimes in the same bar. He was a cabaret pianist, a mystic of his own small church, and a master of the raised eyebrow. Read his legend, then listen: the jokes fall away and a lucid sadness remains.
