Description

In Part 1 of Anna Karenina, Tolstoy introduces the complex web of relationships that drive the novel. Anna, a devoted wife and mother, visits her brother Oblonsky in Moscow to mediate his marital troubles. There, she meets the charming Count Vronsky and embarks on a passionate romance, igniting societal gossip and personal turmoil. Meanwhile, Konstantin Levin struggles with proposals to Kitty, who initially favors Vronsky, leading to heartbreak. Set against Russia’s aristocratic backdrop, this section explores themes of love, duty, and societal expectations. As characters navigate their desires and obligations, the stage is set for a profound examination of happiness and morality.

Author

Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) was born to a titled family at Yasnaya Polyana, served in the Crimean War, and wrote the two novels that made Russian fiction a world event: War and Peace and Anna Karenina. The first holds a nation at war and at home; the second holds a marriage until it breaks. Later he turned from the worldly novel toward essays and moral tales, arguing with church, property, and his own fame. One hundred and six titles here.
