Description
A lodger named Emelyan — poor, thirsty, pitiful — is taken in. Kindness becomes a job: food, lectures, the hope of work. Then a wadded greatcoat goes missing. Dostoyevsky’s An Honest Thief is a small apartment and a large question: what honesty is, when pity and drink share a bed. Compassion, tested, and not quite refused. Dostoyevsky in a single room, without the courtroom. The narrator wants to be good; the lodger wants another glass; the coat becomes a verdict neither man can quite pronounce.
