Description

Young Agnes Grey takes posts as a governess with the Bloomfields and later the Murrays. Spoiled children, thin wages, and a daily fight for self-respect fill the work. Kind curate Mr Weston becomes her true attachment; vain rector Mr Hatfield is a foil, not a rich prize. Quiet novel of labour, class, and love earned without theatre.

Author

Anne Brontë (1820–1849) wrote with a quieter blade than her sisters: Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall look steadily at work, drink, and a woman’s right to leave. The moral force has not dated.
