Description

John Norton, a repressed Catholic landowner, moves toward marriage with Kitty Hare until a tramp?s assault shatters the wedding path and Kitty?s despair ends in a fall from a window. Stark novel of faith, violence, and ruined promise. Moore at his most unsparing about bodies and belief.

Author

George Moore (1852–1933) was the Irish novelist who brought French naturalism into English fiction and never quite stopped arguing with Ireland about it. Trained among the painters and writers of Paris, he wrote of art, desire, and the stubborn facts of ordinary life — servants, theatres, and consciences under pressure. Esther Waters remains his most durable novel: a story of a working woman's endurance told without Victorian flinch.
