Description

Delicate heiress Sibyl Carruthers is stirred by music into fierce love for older, restrained Mr Loftus, then confesses a passion that collides with cautious maturity and society’s watchful eyes. Youthful devotion meets experience that will not rush. Spoken as when a devotee still asks what a butterfly heart risks when it names its love aloud.

Author

Mary Cholmondeley (1859–1925) was English novelist of psychological depth. Born aristocratic, she explored Victorian women's constraints. Her breakthrough, "Red Pottage," depicted repression and greed. She portrayed claustrophobic domestic settings, blending mystery with realism. Unmarried, she channelled observation into fiction. Her work influenced feminist literature.
