Description

This satirical story by Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov, describing the absurd struggle in the capital's Control for the procurement of claws and tails, ridicules the bureaucratic absurdity of the Soviet system. Power, warring factions and comic characters create a kaleidoscope of absurd events. Through the telling of unusual office tales, the satire encourages reflection on the futility of bureaucracy and blind faith in authority, emphasizing that no tribune or leader can change the system until it is completely revised.

Author

Ilya Ilf (1897–1937) was a Soviet journalist and satirist best known for his collaboration with Yevgeny Petrov. Together — as Ilf and Petrov — they wrote The Twelve Chairs and The Golden Calf, comic novels of hustlers, schemes, and the absurdities of early Soviet life that remain among the funniest books in Russian literature.
