Ida B. Wells-Barnett

Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862–1931) was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi, taught school, and then wrote for the Memphis press until a mob destroyed her office. Southern Horrors and The Red Record treat lynching as a documented crime: names, dates, a refusal to look polite. She worked from Chicago, helped found the NAACP, and kept the facts in public. Courage, in her case, had footnotes. The sentences are calm. The evidence is not.
