Frances Ellen Watkins Harper

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825–1911) was a poet, lecturer, and novelist — a free Black woman from Baltimore who made the platform and the page serve abolition and temperance. Iola Leroy: Shadows Uplifted is among the earliest novels by an African American woman, a Reconstruction story of family, passing, and work. One title here. Dignity is the method.
