Booker T. Washington

Booker T. Washington (1856–1915) was born into slavery in Virginia, walked to Hampton Institute, and built Tuskegee into a working campus of trades and letters. Up from Slavery is the autobiography that turned that climb into a national text: education, labour, and the long patience of rising. He dined at the White House and argued, not without cost, for a path through skill. The sentences are measured. The stakes are a people learning how to stand.
