Edgar Wallace (1875–1932) was born in Greenwich, raised by a fish porter's family, and learned his trade as a reporter — South Africa, the Daily Mail, the habit of copy that could not wait. The Angel of Terror and The Clue of the Twisted Candle move like news: clues, chases, a clock in the plot. He sold in the millions and died in Hollywood with another story still open. Deduction here is less a puzzle than a chase with manners.
