Jean Toomer

Jean Toomer (1894–1967) wrote Cane, a modernist book of Georgia and of mixed form — poems, sketches, stories — that the Harlem Renaissance claimed and that Toomer refused to wear as a label. He taught briefly in the South, then spent a life resisting categories. He wanted to be read as American, not as a box. One title here, and it still feels like a beginning that never quite had a second act to match it.
