William Temple

William Temple (1881–1944) was Archbishop of Canterbury in wartime, a Christian socialist, and a writer of prayers that still turn up when people ask for peace. Son of another archbishop, he argued that the church belonged in the social question, not only in the sanctuary. Two titles on this list: hope, protection, and a prayer for peace. The sentences are pastoral and public at once — faith as a form of civic weather.
