Jehan Tabourot

Jehan Tabourot (1520–1595), writing as Thoinot Arbeau, was a French cleric whose Orchesographie is the great handbook of late Renaissance social dance: steps, drum, and conversation in one book. He taught how a hall should move, and how a drum should keep it honest. The branle that became Ding Dong Merrily on High still rings from those pages. One title here — a carol that owes its lift to a dancing priest of Langres, still keeping time.
