Harriet Beecher Stowe

Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811–1896) wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin and forced a country to look at what it had agreed not to see. A Beecher from New England, she used the domestic novel — kitchens, children, deathbeds — as a political instrument. Sentiment is the method; freedom is the stake. The book sold like a tract and argued like a sermon; it was praised, banned, staged, and stolen from. Two other titles sit beside it here. She outlived the war her novel helped make inevitable, still writing, still sure that feeling could be a form of proof.
