Anna Sewell

Anna Sewell (1820–1878) wrote Black Beauty, a horse's autobiography that changed how readers felt about cruelty. Lame for much of her adult life, she knew dependence and pain from the inside; the novel asks you to live in a body that cannot speak except through the page. Cab horses, bearing reins, kindness, and the long road: Sewell made animal welfare a story, not a tract. She died shortly after publication, having seen the book begin its extraordinary life. One great novel — a long mercy — and it still teaches children (and adults) how to look at a working animal.
