Saint Francis of Assisi

Francis of Assisi (c. 1181–1226) turned wealth into a legend of poverty and praise. Son of a merchant, he left comfort for an itinerant life of preaching, founded the Franciscan order, and wrote of sun, wind, and creatures as kin. The Canticle of the Creatures and the prayers in our catalogue keep that weather: holiness that looks at birds and beggars with the same courtesy. Canonised within two years of his death, Francis remains Christianity's most beloved image of simplicity.
