Martin Robison Delany

Martin Robison Delany (1812–1885) was an American abolitionist, physician, journalist, and early theorist of Black nationalism. Free-born in Virginia and raised in Pennsylvania, he treated cholera when others fled, argued for African American elevation and emigration, and later served as a Union Army officer. The Condition, Elevation, Emigration, and Destiny of the Colored People of the United States remains a landmark of nineteenth-century Black political thought.
