Thomas Love Peacock

Thomas Love Peacock (1785–1866) wrote comic novels of talk — Nightmare Abbey, Headlong Hall, Crotchet Castle — in which characters gather to argue, dine, and expose their favourite theories. A friend of Shelley and a sharp satirist of Romantic excess, Peacock made conversation itself the plot. Few English comedies are dryer, or more cheerfully intellectual.
