Zora Neale Hurston

Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960) was an American novelist, anthropologist, and folklorist of the Harlem Renaissance. She wrote of Black life in the South with an ear for vernacular speech and a refusal to flatten her characters into symbols. Their Eyes Were Watching God is her most famous novel; The Mule-Bone, written with Langston Hughes, shows her theatrical side. Hurston also collected Hoodoo and Caribbean folklore — a scholar who treated culture as living practice, not museum display.
