John Milton

John Milton (1608–1674) wrote the English epic that still defines the language of heaven and hell. Paradise Lost, composed in blank verse after the Civil War and in the darkness of his blindness, retells the Fall with a grandeur that makes Satan magnetic and Adam and Eve painfully human. Milton was also a polemicist for liberty — of press, of conscience, of the commonwealth — and a civil servant under Cromwell.
