Oscar Micheaux

Oscar Micheaux (1884–1951) was an American novelist and the first major African-American feature filmmaker. Before the cameras, he wrote of homesteading and race in novels such as The Homesteader; then he turned those stories into independent 'race films' when Hollywood would not. Micheaux produced both silent and sound pictures, building a Black cinema by force of will. His fiction and films share the same stubborn subject: self-making against a hostile map.
