George MacDonald

George MacDonald (1824–1905) was a Scottish novelist, poet, and Congregational minister who helped invent modern fantasy. A mentor to Lewis Carroll, he wrote fairy tales and adult romances in which goodness has texture and evil has weather. The Princess and the Goblin and The Princess and Curdie remain doorways into a kindly, serious magic — stories that treat children as capable of wonder and of courage. MacDonald's influence runs through later fantasy like a hidden spring.
