St Ignatius Loyola
St Ignatius of Loyola (c. 1491–1556) was a Spanish Basque priest who founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and became its first Superior General. A soldier turned mystic after a cannonball shattered his leg, Ignatius developed the Spiritual Exercises — a programme of prayer, meditation, and self-examination that has guided millions. His writings on discernment and devotion continue to shape Christian spirituality across traditions.
