Hugh Lofting

Hugh Lofting (1886?1947) was the English-American creator of Doctor Dolittle, the physician who talks with animals and turned kindness into adventure. The character began in illustrated letters Lofting sent home to his children from the trenches of the First World War, when he preferred to invent cheerful stories rather than describe the war around him. That origin gives the books their special tone: comic voyages, eccentric creatures, and a humane belief that listening across difference is its own kind of wisdom. Lofting's stories remain children's classics because they pair fantasy with decency, and mischief with a genuinely generous imagination.
