Sinclair Lewis

Sinclair Lewis (1885–1951) was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, recognised for his vivid, satirical portraits of middle-class life. Main Street and Babbitt made small-town conformity a national mirror; Arrowsmith examined medical idealism; Elmer Gantry skewered religious hypocrisy. Lewis's wit and photographic realism gave American fiction a new confidence — and an uncomfortable honesty about its own culture.
