Nikolai Leskov

Nikolai Leskov (1831–1895) was a Russian novelist and short-story writer praised by Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Gorky for his ornate narrative voice and ear for living speech. His tales of provincial life, clergy, and craftsmen created a mosaic of nineteenth-century Russia unmatched in breadth. Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and The Enchanted Wanderer show a storyteller whose invention rivals any in the language.
